While on active duty, he earned his navigator wings and trained in electronic warfare, flying over 5,000 hours in nine different airplanes over 21 years. (During Vietnam, he flew 125 combat reconnaissance missions.) For his service, President Leishman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, six Air Medals, the Meritorious Service Medal and two Air Force Commendation Medals.

Leishman retired from the Air Force to accept employment with The Boeing Company, where he managed the B-1B Flight Simulator Logistics Support, and supported the space shuttle program. He is active in the local Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Delaware, and supports The American Legion and Boys State program. He is active in Masonic Orders, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and is a Life Member of The American Legion, the U.S. Power Squadron, and the Air Force Association.
