Houston hosted a National Congress in 1952 and Ray O. Edwards, a 1952 Minute Man of Florida, was our PPG. On Sept. 17 of that year “I am an American Day” & “Constitution Day” were renamed “Citizenship Day”.
What else was going on in 1952 you ask?
In the sports world the NFL New York Yanks became the Dallas Texans. Texan Babe Didrikson-Zaharias won the LPGA Titleholders Golf Championship. The St. Louis Browns fired manager Rogers Hornsby who was quickly hired by the Cincinnati Reds. Boston Brave Warren Spahn struck out 18 Cubs in 15 innings while the Brooklyn Dodgers clinched the NL pennant over the New York Giants.
In the entertainment world “Dragnet” with Jack Webb premiered on NBC TV and the movie African Queen with Humphrey Bogart opened. “The Greatest Show on Earth”, directed and produced by Cecil B. DeMille, starring James Stewart and Charlton Heston, also opened. Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Old Man & the Sea” was published.
Technology saw the first ultra high frequency (UHF) television station in Portland OR, the first video recording on magnetic tape in LA, CA, and the first thermonuclear bomb was detonated in the Marshall Islands.
Around the world Puerto Rico became a US commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne in England, while a military coup led by General Batista occurred in Cuba.
